MediaBanc Leads Copyright Issue Awareness

MediaBanc, being the largest media monitoring and media analysis service provider in Southeast Asia takes the lead to boost awareness of copyright issue in the industry and take it to a higher level. The main objective of the efforts to educate the industry on copyright issue is to clearly communicate daily the actions done by companies or organizations that could possibly impact the copyright laws.

Chief Executive Officer of MediaBanc, Alan Lim, explained in an interview the importance of copyright. “MediaBanc believes in giving appropriate credit when using the contents, be it on television, online or in print media. As users we have to respect the content creators for the industry to grow.” He also added, "MediaBanc fully understands this and that is why we are working as an industry to monetize the process." In line with this, MediaBanc and national news agency, Bernama, sealed an agreement to use the contents produced by the latter for a fee.

According to Alan Lim, the standard has been somewhat at par with that of developed countries since at the moment there is no proper association to monitor the industry. He further explains the efforts of MediaBanc on copyright, "We operate very loosely for the betterment of the industry. When we signed with Bernama I called the competitors and partners in the business and explained to them the deal. When they agreed we signed the deal, they followed as well." Moreover, Lim said that about 60-70 percent of content providers in Malaysia have the same arrangements.

MediaBanc is also currently operating in Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. Similar with MediaBanc Malaysia, efforts to boost awareness on copyright is done on the said countries.
